Shopping hours in Skagway

Going on an Alaskan cruise during July 2008. We are going on an excursion that over by 4:00 PM - are the stores in Skagway open for a while? The ship leaves around 8:00 PM - do you think we would have a few hours to shop? Thanks for your advice!

most of the shops in skagway are open up until the last ship sails. some of the smaller store will close. but the main stream shops will definatly be open. i hope this helps.

Agreeing with the above post -- even if their hours are posted as something else, they may stay open while a ship is in port. Though we had a similar issue... a tour and show at the local theatre, and we shopped later. We were disappointed the Train Shoppe had closed mid-afternoon, but otherwise many of the larger stores for Alaskan-made gifts or touristy t-shirts were still open. The town itself is something of an architecturally charming marvel in itself, even if everything was closed!

TIP on shopping in Alaska. We were on a cruise ship last year that was one of the last for the season. We were in the Alaska coast towns and the shops knew it was the last week of ship tourist sales. Prices were cut to the bear bones and we even found shops willing to bargain. One shop owner told us after the cruise season many shop owners close and head south for the winter and don't want to leave any merchandise on the shelves. This shop owner was heading back to Hong Kong.
