We will be in Margarita Island , Venezuela from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on the Celebrity- Galaxy cruise in Feb. Is this a safe place to do things on your own? What is there to do? We were hoping to take a cab to a nice , clear, CALM WATER, beach. Is this a good idea- the ship does not seem to offer any shore excursions SUGGESTIONS? Thanks
Re: Margarita Island, Venezuela SAFE PLACE ? BEACHES?
Spent a week on Margarita Island about 10 years ago. We found it pretty safe - although apparently in Porlamar (the main town) you should keep a firm grip on your purse - purse snatching is an occasional problem. Beaches - it's been awhile - so I forget some of the names: Playa El Agua is one of the largest and most developed beach areas - but I found the water a little rough - my husband liked it and did some body surging. The beach near Juan Griego (a lovely little town) has calmer water.
I am sure your cruise ship will offer some tours. If they offer an island tour - it is worth it - parts of the island are quite lovely - I liked the National Park - El Copey - spectacular views and I also enjoyed the fortress where Luisa Arismendi (a national heroine of Venezuela) was held prisoner . Whatever you do - do not just stay on the ship - this is an interesting island with friendly people. If you get a chance try a "Coco Frio" - frozen coconut - so good and refreshing on a hot day.

Thanks for all the interesting information. So far Celebrity does not have any shore excursions listed for this island -that is one of the reasons why we have so many questions on what to do. I definitely will not miss getting off the ship. Thanks again.
