Machu Picchu cruise excursion
I would appreciate comments from anyone who has experienced the Machu Picchu excursion taken during a three day cruise stop in Lima, Peru.
Is the itinerary too rushed?
Is the bus ride up to the ruins a frightening experience? (Frightening for some -- fun for others?)
We did Machu Picchu as a precruise visit last January, but we enjoyed the days we spent in Ariquipa and Cusco getting used to the elevation, before huffing and puffing to the top.
The bus ride is quite safe along narrow winding mountain roads. The alternative is a four day hike in along old Inca trails. There's a train ride from Cusco to the bus stop for the climb to the site.
The ruins are truly one of the world's wonders -- a must see if at all possible.
Thank you for the information Ruth, we plan to visit Machu Picchu in the near future.
I think you need a couple of days in cusco to allow your body some time getting used to the altitude. Also from a cruise ship (if you choose machu picchu) you will miss out on Lima, which is a wonderful city.
Do a land vacation to Peru. You will not be sorry. We used a very good tour company and paid less than 1000 dollars p.p. including air, nice hotels, and the train tour to machu picchu, which was a nine night tour of Lima, Cusco and M.P.
There are several other ruins and attractions to see on this trip as well.
