Default College Spring Break

My boyfriend's family booked their first cruise just in time for college spring break! They're going on Carnival Liberty March 20. My boyfriend's been before with me, but his mom, her boyfriend, and little brother haven't. They're not "party people" to say the least. The didn't book our school vacation (that I'm going on!) because they didn't want too many kids - even though they have two. I can't figure out how that makes sense, but whatever. She wasn't aware it was college spring break and isn't too thrilled about that either. So I have a few questions, just to amuse myself...

-How rowdy does college break get on a ship & in Ft. Lauderdale? I've only caught the end of it and that was pretty crazy, so how will it be in full force?

-Will there be many other 12 year olds so the little brother won't be completely bored? He's a hard one to entertain without video games.

Any other info on college spring break cruising for first time cruisers would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Rebecca, as far as I know, colleges have different spring breaks. For instance, I know mine is March 5-15 and this seems to be consistent with most Florida schools as well as some northern one's as well (such as Penn State, , but others range anywhere between early March and late April, this is also, in part, the reason why the "Spring Break" cruise season is supposed to last from March to May.

As for college partying, it gets extremely intense. I know from experience. I would imagine it only gets bigger on Spring Break as well. On top of it all, you are talking about sailing from Fort Lauderdale, which happens to be part of South Florida, which is usually labeled as a huge party region.

I know that some primary and secondary (K-5/Middle Schools/High schools) have chosen the week before (March 13) for spring break as a popular date (March 15ish?) As for your sailing date, I just found a really valuable resource. You won't have too many college partiers onboard. The major schools with spring break for your sail date are Cornell, MIT, OSU (Ohio State), USAF, G Tech, and U Colorado (both Boulder and Denver).

If you have more specific questions (because I obviously can't detail the finer points of the college lifestyle on here, send me a private message or drop a line on facebook.

Oh, and for everyone, if you want to see which colleges are out during your spring break, I suggest looking here: When is Spring Break 2009 - 2010 - College and University Spring Break 2010 Dates

Thanks for the response!

I think I have the basic ideas of how extreme the college partying can be having seen some of spring break in action on my last Carnival cruise. I'm just very interested to see how my boyfriends rather "uptight" mom is going to view it. I almost wish I was going with them to view their reactions. The schools you mentioned, they are on break for the March 20th sailing, right?

Also good to know that some of the secondary schools will have their spring break then also so my boyfriend's little brother will have a shot at finding some friends. Spring break for K-12 isn't until after Easter here.

The schools I threw in were the major ones. There are a number of smaller schools that are also out as well.

And uh-oh. Uptight and college partying do not mix well. At all. I would love to see her flip though. Its always funny to watch. But yes, they can expect a decent number of people.

Keep in mind that some schools don't have a real spring break. My college is giving us a 4 day weekend for Easter weekend, and calling it "spring break".

I'm sorry, Timmy! I would rather travel over winter break anyway because it's a lot longer than spring break. Hope that makes you feel a little better

No way! Spring Break is where it's at! (I like cruising in the winter too tho )

Our spring break is the 6-14th of March and it seems a lot of SC schools have that same week. Carolina Nightlife is sponsoring a College Spring Break Cruise on the Monarch trip leaving March 8. We're considering this one since I booked a show that closes off March 5th and 13th for me (effectively boxing me in) but I don't know if I want to be in the midst of all that spring break action on such a small ship.

I don't have much time off for spring break so that's the only reason I would rather travel over winter break. It's also super expensive to go over spring break. I had an opportunity to go to Jamaica with sisters but only like two are going due to lack of money. I think they are headed to FL next spring break which would be more reasonable.

This is kind of off topic but relates to college life. For anyone who is in college, do you guys do overnight trips to like hotels with casinos, clubs etc.?

My spring break was uber cheap. Like 600/person for a balcony cheap (Carnival), or same price on RCI on Freedom Class ships for an Oceanview. Honestly, the only really expensive thing are flights, and even then, they aren't excessively expensive if you know where to look. You just got to know where to look and where to go. Quite honestly though, I would much rather cruise the spring break season over winter break.

As for overnight trips, we take trips when we feel like it. I mean, its nothing organized, but if me and a few friends want to go down to my beach house, then we'll plan a weekend, and hit the clubs and such, but there is really no reason to because the nightlife in Tallahassee is pretty good (as in good enough to justify NOT going anywhere else). However, there are times where people do want to go somewhere overnight (like NOLA for Mardi Gras), and in that case, they split the cost of the trip and stay in a hotel.

The flight always kills us! I'm dying to get out of all this snow but I love having multiple snow days. We've gotten like 30 inches in like 2 weeks and it's not melting. As time goes on, I don't feel like I want to cruise as much. I don't really know why that is happening!

I haven't taken an overnight trip yet, but a couple weekends ago some girls went to a casino/shopping/clubbing/bar area down the shore and they actually stayed for free. I feel like if you're 21, it's awesome and if you're not, it sucks haha

Drive next time if its in the continental US. I know PA to Miami can be done in 24 hours. And you don't have to be 21 to have a good night. As for the snow, you'll have to make it up eventually, which will make it even worse. Usually, a casino will pick up the tab if you gamble enough, or you can cover the tab with your winnings (Ryan probably knows more about this than I do as I rarely gamble).

Ok, heres the deal on the casinos:

In Florida, you must be 21 to play tables or slots so anyone under 21 is inelgible for comps at any of the major casinos (esp. the high profile ones in Lauderdale and south fla. in general). Many other states adopt similar age laws. Biloxi and Atlantic City are 18 in some places. Vegas is 21, firm, and almost all reservations are either A. 21+ or B. A Joke of a casino because their games aren't Vegas style and therefore don't follow the same rules or have the same payouts as Vegas style gaming.

Onboard ships you can gamble at 18, but few teens play enough to meet the requirements for the player's club. You have to play a minimum of $50 per hand and a minimum of 6 hours per day in the casino to be elgible for RCI's player's club. Once I turned 18 and was able to begin playing I met the requirements and they do offer some nice comps onboard- things like stateroom upgrades, in-room amenities, SeaPass credits and dining/spa appointments on the casino's tab.

If you're looking to gamble at sea, RCI is the line to go on as they're the only one with a really established player's club. Carnival's isn't worth a crap. Sorry but when I'm playing $100 a hand on blackjack, I expect a little more than some cookies in my stateroom.

Technically this is still a teen board, so if anyone has any specific questions regarding playing tables, slots or the loyalty programs, you can contact me on my aim at TheCruiseKing or facebook me @ www.facebook.com/djcarolina.

To Mike-

We've thought about driving down but we only really like 4 day cruises. We really don't have more than 4 days anyway and driving would probably require a couple days since we would most likely stop a lot. The farthest south we have driven was North Carolina haha We're planning a trip to North Carolina at some point and I'm not looking forward to the drive.

I've had good nights out obviously since I'm in greek life but at times, it's not fun being underage.

We don't make up snow days which is awesome! Another storm is on the way and we've already had 73 inches this season

To Mike and Ryan-

I don't know exactly how they got the room, but somehow they did. They went to AC for the night. I've wanted to gamble on a cruise ship just to say that I did but it hasn't happend yet. Everytime I go, I say I'll do it and it never happens.

Stay with the nickle slots. I actually won $5 once (apparently the $5 Mike owes Ryan. It's my $5 hahaha)

That's why you choose a cruise I'm on and allow me to show you how to turn $100 into $5,000 playing blackjack for 4 days.

When are you going? Your sentence sounded like a line in a commercial! I would only spend my time gambling if the club wasn't good lol

Grandeur of the Seas- casino payout is always very good and the club, while it has a lot of potential-being in the viking crown at the top of the ship, just never has the energy that ships with the lower-level themed nightclub do. Ur more than welcome to join in on the fun. Low Rates, Packages Available, Fun Guaranteed

You're very convincing! When are you going? I have no idea when our next cruise is but I know we'll be heading south... near the outer banks.

At this point, we have two options:

Grandeur of the Seas: 5 Night Mexican Excursion departing March 6, 2010 from Tampa, FL

or

Liberty of the Seas: 7 Night "Adventure" departing July 25, 2010 from Miami, FL

Both are opportunities for Royal Caribbean to become "The Real Fun Ships"

I don't think I'll be cruising until after I'm done with school. We'll probably go in the summer but we don't know when because I don't know when my summer classes will be yet. I want to go in August again because I had the best time ever but we'll see what happens! If I had a choice, I would go on EOS again!

Enchantment will no longer be conducting service from Florida this summer. It will be home ported in Baltimore permanently. Grandeur will be doing some moving around as well. After March, she will be moving to Fort Lauderdale from her current home port in Tampa. In November 2010 she will be permanently home ported in Panama, thus ending the reign of vision class ships in south Florida.

I LOVE EOS! It's my favorite ship ever and I would love to go on her out of Baltimore but it's actually more expensive for us to drive to a nearby port and go on a cruise, than it is for us to fly down to FL and hop on a boat.

We need a 4-day/5-day cruise plus airfare that is less than $2,000 (with fees) to consider it... and yes, every cruise we've been on has been under that number except for one.
