Default Tipping

We read alot of threads about tipping prior to our cruise. What we did is separated money & set it aside for all of the tips for the end of the cruise: matre'd, waiter, asst waiter & stateroom attendant. Then we set aside extra money ($1's) for extra tipping as needed for porters, excursions, etc. Then on the last day in our room there were envelopes left for us for each of these people. We then put the money in it & if they did an exceptional job we put more money in it. Then we handed them to each of those people. We gave our stateroom attendant hers after she turned down our bed for the last nite, the matre'd when he came & shook our hand at the end of the last dining room dinner & the waiter & asst waiter after dessert was served. It was really quite simple actually: ($3.50 pp/per day=$7/day) for waiter = $49, same for stateroom attendant. ($2.00 pp/perday=$4/day) for asst waiter=$28. We had very good service so we gave $55 for waiter, $55 stateroom, $35 asst waiter & $10 matre'd. By the way-many things have been said about shared tips. We asked our waiter & the asst waiter & they both said that no they do not share or pool their tips.

Hi Mark and Deb,
Thanks so much for your tipping suggestions, we also do the same thing, have all the "tip" money seperated before we even leave home, then we can add to it if needed, seems to work great for us.

Mark and Deb it would be helpful if you put down which line you cruised, perhaps they don't pool tips on that particular line but they do on many others.
Also glad you tipped your maitre'd, did he actually do anything for you, or did you tip him just for coming by the table and shaking your hand. ( oh and making small talk" how was everything tonight mam'"?)

We were on Radiance. The Matre'd came by several times at dinner to check on things & he was also talking to people even during the day in the Windjammer asking if things were ok. On my birthday he brought out a cake for me & the 1st nite the newly wed couple he brought their left-over wedding cake & served it himself to all of us at the table. He was pretty good Our waiter Alex & our Asst waiter - Santos said also that the Pedro the matre'd helps them out alot.
