Comments on tipping from a future cruiser- RCI Jewel 3/06

We will be taking our first cruise next spring but have traveled the Caribbean extensively and own time in St. Maarten. We were told that in most hotels, restaurants, etc. that service workers don't actually get the 15% service charge that is added to the bill...it is kept by the owners. I wonder if this is also true on cruise ships? If so, that could account for the poor service on some ships. We've become accustomed to the slow service on the islands and sort of go with the flow...but since exceptional service is expected on a cruise.. I can see where some object to having tips automatically billed to their card if service was lacking.

I've spoken to some of the staff on several ships regarding their tips. Not one ever told me they don't receive their percentage. They did tell me if I tipped more, they had to pool it and share with the others.

Interesting that you are commenting on the poor service on cruise ships having never been on one. Cruise ship staff do not function on "isaland time" like many tourist workers (waiters, bar tenders and hotel staff) in the Caribbean. Such actions would not be tolerated. Each cruise line has it's own way of handling tips but workers receive 100%.

I just hand over extra cash. I can't see how this can be monitored to be put into a pool to be devided.

My comments on tipping

First chance I've had to return to the forum to view replies to my comment on tipping. Responding to PapaBill and Old Man: I made my comment after reading complaints about tipping and poor service on THIS FORUM...I responded with an example of what I know happens in hotels and restaurants in the Caribbean. I certainly am not stupid enough to imply this is what happens on a cruise ship since I've never cruised....re read the post!!!! Duh!!
