Restaurant auto-tipping
Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for "large" parties. My wife and I ate lunch at a little cafe in Fort Lauderdale yesterday, and while I could lose a little weight, I don't think the two of us constituted a large party. And yet, our bill of less than $30 included a gratuity. The amount was less than I would normally tip. But I decided that since they set the rule, I would abide by it and the server lost out a little bit.

We've been in a similiar circumstance and did as you did .

Obviously, there are times when the servers don't even receive the recommended amount of tips, so hopefully they will come out ahead with this type of tipping rule. Just so happened, this time, they lost out on some....

I know someone who tips a maximum of 4% on meals .

Only 4%, that is quite a bit on the low side, the normal is 15 to 20%???

I usually trip close to 20%.

I knew a couple who were adamant about tipping a max of 10%. I guess I am sympathetic with servers since my mother worked for over 25 years as a waitress in diners and restaurants, and we usually lived off of her tips. So I am a 20% tipper as a minimum and often do 30% or more.

I too tip at least 20% .I tip my barber 45%.

However , we have friends (2 couples) who will never give more than 4 % .Notmally when my wife and I are out with them I let them leave the table area and sneak money onto the table to make up for their stinginess.

We share the same thought. The four percent is much lesser compare to 10 or 15 percent. To add more, it used to be that everyone paid with cash, or maybe a check, for anything, everywhere. However, we now reside in the credit and debit card era and are heading for mobile payments, but one should always make an effort to tip servers with cash wherever possible. Check more here
