Default Flirting Crewmembers. Do cruiselines have a policy

I had heard stories like this one before but thought it was right out of the tabloids until it happened to someone I know.
A friend of ours left her husband of 14 years in 2000, after he discovered she was having an affair with an Alaskan Cruise ship waiter on a Holland America ship. Her grandmother offered to take her on an Alaskan cruise, paying the whole shot. Of course she accepted granny`s offer and went along, leaving hubby at home.
Well she ended up getting between the sheets with her waiter while on the cruise, and hubby started getting suspicious when she started visiting a "girlfriend" in Vancouver twice a month. He followed up on her whereabouts and discovered the affair a couple of months later. I have seen crew members fawning over single women (some married) on board cruises, I wondered if the cruise lines actually have a policy about conducting affairs with passengers, or do they look the other way?

P.S. The love affair fizzled and she now sells time-shares in Cancun. Her ex is now happily remarried!

I have heard stories of the crew banging alot of the young girls on the ship while mommy and daddy are in the casino. Hey when your on a ship for eights months anything is fair game. There might be rules but thats not going to stop a dog in heat. Months ago I read on one of the boards about a underage girl that was having an affair with a thirty year old crew member.

Who on earth would take these men seriously. They probably flirt with everything that moves. Oh Well..I guess it depends on what you are looking for (that's assuming you are looking)

Cuttie, alot of what I do at work is sales. If you put the message out to a thousand women, one of them is going to take your offer. It seem in fashion to have an affair these days. These guys do get a lot of takers. Married men watch your wives!

Linda I hope to God you were not married when you did this. But by the way you said never never never, I think you just broke your wedding vows. If I was to do this to Cindy, I could never look at her face again and would probably carry the guilt to my grave. But my wife knowing me better than myself, would know in a second.

When I was 18 I met Carlos from Portugal on one of the old Dolphin ships. He was very willing to come to my room, but luckily one of my roommates told me not to be stupid, which at 18 you can be. I know there are policys against crew members picking up on the passengers, he would had been fired if he had been caught.

It is incredible how some of the wait staff act. We used to sail on
the SeaBreeze before she sank...we always asked for a certain
waiter Maxwell, because he always gave us great services. After
5 cruises, he started making the move, to the point of making it almost impossible to enjoy going to dinner...he took us asking for
him as an opening to say and do whatever he wanted...was glad that cruise came to an end, and we never asked for him again...

I see an NBC movie of the week here or possibly a "cruise busting " story on Geraldo.

About 10 years ago I was on a ship with my then husband and his mom. They wanted to go see the mayan ruins and since I had seen them several times I stayed on board to lay by the pool. After about an hour I hear clapping and a skinny Italian man was applauding My "show" of laying there. He came up to me and told me he wanted to do some gross!! things to me. I hightailed it back to my cabin and this guy followed me to the stairs and watched me run down the stairs. Everytime I looked up he was leaning over the rail and was laughing at me. We saw the jerk that night walking with a woman in his full Chief engineer uniform. He just looked at me and laughed again. I feel sorry for the poor woman he finally picked up.

Yes, the cruiselines (at least RCI) have "rules" and if caught the crew member gets sent home.

I'm a little surprised that everyone seems to be blaming the crew member. Last I knew it takes two. The wife is as much at fault as the crew member and should take half the blame. After all, she was the one who was married and doing the cheating! Who knows, maybe the waiter was married too.

Thank you for saying that! It DOES take two....the wife is due part of the blame.

Yes, some of the men working on these cruise ships are very bold, lonely for companionship (even if only for a few days, after all a new crop will be along soon!), and extremely convincing! I have been there to see it first hand. Anybody who chooses to get involved with crew or staff on a cruise should do so with their eyes wide open, realizing that it will most likely be over when the ship arrives back at it's point of origin.

I am not saying that a person could not find true love in this manner, I DID. I have been very happily married to my band director for more than 12 years now. He was not very overt about his approaching me at first, he was shy at first and it took quite some time to blossum (my friend was totally taken by one of his band members, so we went back and cruised often) into a relationship. But believe me, I witnessed quite the opposite on those many trips with many of the other crew and staff.

the bottom line is if you decide to throw caution to the wind and slip between the sheets with a stranger, don't expect a long term relationship out of it. I was just blessed, as I know some others have been, too.

This woman should be ashamed of herself, but glad to hear her ex is happy now.

I have to agree with that comment, it takes 2. Although, I am sorry to hear what happened to Linda, that's awful. I would have been terrified and very angry.

But if it weren't for those who make it so easy, it wouldn't be such a problem. And the crew members are not stuck on the ships the entire time, they do spend a lot of time in ports. And there are plenty of other crew members to meet. At least they have time to get to know one another. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to try to meet someone and within one week have a fling and never see them again. Maybe I'm missing something. I don't feel deprived so I'm probably better off not knowing what I'm missing.

This has at least been an educational discussion. I know that if I ever go on a cruise without my boyfriend, don't get too friendly with any crew members.

Actually, the blunt of the responsibility for such action has to rest on the crew member.......sure it takes two but the crew member.....but you can't fire a passanger <G>
More of this thread and we will have to rename the board "As the Board Turns"!

Cruiselines have very strict rules and many a crewmember has been fired over improper behaviour. It is strictly against the rules for a crewmember to enter a guest cabin. One complaint and the crewmember is gone. Our best friend happens to be a crewmember and she has even stayed at our home many times and is like a member of the family. Whenever we are on the same ship, (only twice so far btw) she flat will not come to our cabin but always meets us in a public place to ensure that there is no question of impropriorty. Does it happen, yes. Is it always the crewmember that starts it, hardly.

Mike, No I was not married. The reason I said never, never, never was because after the cruise I could not get rid of him!For quite a while I heard from him every week or so. It would have been flattering but I found out HE was married. That's the reason. If I had known I would have gone no where near him.

Actually I know of quite a few crewmen and women that have had passengers hit on them throughout the cruise and even afterwards even though the crewperson made it quite clear they were not interested.

Linda, I'm glad I was wrong. Two things that I hate to hear. Someone cheating on their spouse and abusing their children.

And to think everyone keeps complaining about extra charges... what about all of the extra services .That's got to be worth a soda, ice cream ,or bottle of booze any day!!! Colleen
